Cultural attractions in Malaga

Visit Alcazaba Fortress built in the 18th century with the purpose of defending against the pirates. This fortress was expanded and transformed into an imposing royal residence three centuries later. But nowadays, the fortress is a very well-preserved museum that offers a magnificent view of the entire city of Málaga and the harbour.

Don’t miss Pablo Picasso Museum housed in Palacio de Buenavista. For example, the museum is comprised of 155 works, donated by the family after the artist’s death. If you like the paintings and art, then make sure you visit this unique place.

Museo Carmen Thyssen is a cultural centre, housed in a renaissance building. The building is a beautiful, airy space to complement the paintings and to retain a real flavour of Andaluz architecture. During renovations, Roman remains were found below the former palace, as well as a Byzantine-style fountain.

Religious attractions in Malaga

Discover Cathedral of Malaga built between 1528 and 1782 near a mosque. The combination of styles is evident because the cathedral has been built over 254 years of work. The Renaissance style predominates but you can see other styles too.

The crypt of Santa Maria de la Victoria was built in 1487 on the place where the Catholic Kings have built their camp during the siege of the city. The main attraction of the sanctuary is the main altar. Inside the crypt are buried the people who dealt with the rebuilding of the church in the 17th century.

Other attractions in Malaga

Gibralfaro is a magnificent building which dates back to the 14th century. The castle is renowned as the final scenario of conquering the city of Malaga by the Catholic Kings in 1487. All that remains in this monument are the towers of defence. Admire the pine and eucalyptus forests as you walk up.

How to travel in Malaga

Public transport is provided by a fairly comprehensive bus network. To travel, you must take a rechargeable card. A race costs 1.30 euros. The local bus company is called EMT. Here you can find even two new undergrounds.

Taxis in Málaga are everywhere. They are always white cars and can be flagged down anywhere as long as they have their green “libre” (available) light on. Taxi rates are very cheap and the meter rarely reaches 5€ on short hops around the city.

Walking is possibly the best way to see the sites of Malaga.  It allows you to take whichever route you want with as many stops as you please. By walking, you can see the things you really are interested in and spend as long as you wish doing so. There are a number of guide books available that suggest walking tours of Malaga. If you go into any of the tourist information centres you will find leaflets offering suggested routes.

By bike is another easy way to travel around Malaga. This is much faster than walking, so you are likely to see more of the sights travelling on a bike. It is possible to rent a bike for a few hours, half a day or a full day (prices vary according to the hire company).

By Segway is a very modern way of getting around Malaga. This cool and unique experience can only be done with a guide, but it is a fun way to see the sights! You are in the open air, you move around quickly and it does not require any physical effort.
