Introduction and activities

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and the largest city in the country. Firstly, you must know that it is located in the historic part of the Inner Carniola. Secondly, important to know is that Slovenia is an independent country since 1991. Thirdly, from historic point of view, the city was influenced by German, Latin and Slavic cultures.

The locals like to say that Ljubljana is the city of love, because its name is coming from the Slavonic word “luba” meaning “loved.” But for hundreds of years the current name is Ljubljana, known also as the “City of the Dragons”.

Historic and cultural attractions in Ljubljana

Ljubljana Castle is the most representative building of the Slovenian capital. You can find it on a hill from where you can admire a beautiful panorama over the old town. Firstly, the castle was inhabited by many tribes and peoples over the years and became part of the Habsburg Empire in 1335. On the other hand, the castle is the ideal place for organising important events.

Ljubljana Old Town is a pleasant place to walk on the narrow streets. Further, you will find here small shops with antiquities, decorative objects and traditional culinary delights. You can’t miss in the Old Town the impressive and well-maintained architecture of the buildings. Most importantly, the buildings are decorated with many dragons, which are an important symbol of the capital of Slovenia.

The Dragon Bridge adorned with famous dragon statues, appears in the most recognisable images of Ljubljana. Firstly, the four dragon statues, which look slightly terrifying and almost real, are a masterpiece. Moreover, the bridge is a unique creation considered to be an extraordinary piece of technical heritage. Secondly, it is a superb example of Art Nouveau architecture, which flourished at the turn of the 20th century. Constructed during the first years of the 20th century, it was one of the largest bridges of its kind to be built in Europe.

Other attractions in Ljubljana

Cathedral of St. Nicholas is Ljubljana’s main church, but also its biggest towering over the Old Town. Despite a history that dates back to the 13th century, the present cathedral goes back to an 18th century design by architect Andrea Pozzo. Admire an elegant baroque structure, featuring twin towers and an enormous central dome. On the other hand, its opulent interiors draw your attention: pink marble, white stucco and gilt, lavishly decorated by many of the city’s most prominent artists. Highlights include the baroque-style frescoes by artists Giulio Quaglio and Matevž Langus.

The Funicular Railway, a modern one, which complements the traditional cultural identity of the Ljubljana Castle, is popular with both domestic and foreign visitors. It is particularly attractive during fine weather, when it offers spectacular views of the city, and is a fast and comfortable connection with the old town centre.

Tivoli Park is the green heart of Ljubljana, being the largest city park. Located north of the central district, Tivoli Park is surrounded by beautiful wells, ponds, playgrounds and superb buildings such as Tivoli Castle or Cekin Villa. But here you can also enjoy a garden with over 160 types of roses and a host of statues that complement the charm of this wonderful place.

Day trips from Ljubljana are very popular as Slovenia is relatively a small country. After you visit the city in 1 or 2 days, you can go on day trips, either by car if you rent one or by joining one of our excursions. Travel to Lake Bled, that will fascinate you at every step. Get a boat on the lake and row to the small island. Hike around the lake for beautiful views. Another day you can go to Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave, one of the most beautiful in Europe.

Best time to visit Ljubljana

Most visitors see summer as the best time to visit Slovenia, when the weather is at its most reliable, the sights are open and the country’s numerous festivals are in full swing. However, you can enjoy many of Slovenia’s attractions outside the peak summer months. Visit during spring and autumn, when the countryside colours are at their most resplendent, hotel prices are slightly lower and the crowds are a little thinner.

Why to go in Ljubljana

Did you wonder why you should come to Ljubljana? Because it is one of the most charming capitals in central Europe, although this is not as popular as Prague, Budapest or Zagreb. Located in the heart of Slovenia, Ljubljana is a charming blend of medieval architecture, huge parks and a relaxing atmosphere. Even if it is the largest city in Slovenia, Ljubljana is small in size so you can explore the main tourist attractions in a single day. Stay few days in this city and you can do many day trips from here.

How to travel in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is a small city and pedestrians friendly because in the last couple of years a good part of the city center got closed for traffic. Unless you need to visit some institution outside the city centre, you can manage easily without using public transport.

By bus: If you intend to use bus transportation in Ljubljana, you need to buy Urbana card. You can get it from tourist information centers, most city street kiosks and post offices hold it as well. It allows you to change as many busses as you need in a time of 90 minutes.

By bike: The town has a lot of respect for bikers and offers a good infrastructure of bike paths. Rent a bike if you want to see more distant sights like the Zoo, or architectural exhibitions in the Fuzine Castle.

By taxi: Ljubljana’s taxis are safe, clean and generally reliable. Order a taxi by phone and you will get lower rates for longer distance trips.
