Introduction to Halkidiniki Peninsula

You will find the enchanting peninsula of Halkidiki located south of Thessaloniki. Most importantly, you must know it consists of three smaller peninsulas: Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos. Monasteries in Halkidiki

The Holy Monastery Simonopetra is without doubt the most daring construction on the Holy Mountain. You must know that the monastery was founded by the Blessed Simon the Myrrhobletes around 1257, as a result of a vision. Hilandar Monastery is one of the largest monasteries on Mount Athos. This monastery is the main spiritual centre of the Serbs from the 12th century. Besides the central church, honoured in the memory of the Presentation of the Virgin, you must know that there are many other chapels. So, if you wish to have some nice, quite time and be spiritually fulfilled, go and visit these lovely monasteries.

After that, visit Petralona Cave, one of the most popular caves in the world due to its age and grandeur. This prehistoric cave is the place where the skull of the oldest European man was found and is 700,000 years old. Walk in this cave, that is decorated with nice reddish stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes. You have to know also that it was used even as a place of refuge in the ice age. The cave tour will remain unforgettable and will create a sense of admiration for the achievements of the Palaeolithic people. Waterland is the largest water park in Eastern Europe. It currently offers six swimming pools, a swimming pool with children’s slides, the luxurious Knossos pool, the wave pool, River Crazy and SuperSlides. Waterland is located in Tagarades, a village on the outskirts of Thessaloniki, on the road to Halkidiki. It is open in May – September and approximately 100,000 people visit it each year.
